Celebrating BIPOC leadership
in the sustainability sector.

The BIPOC Fellowship

This is an invaluable opportunity for BIPOC leaders in the environmental non-for-profit sector. Fellows are provided with a stipend over two years to support them and their organizations. Funds are spent at the discretion of the fellow, they can go towards personal professional development, training for their team, conferences, salaries and much more! During the two years, fellows will also participate in quarterly BIPOC roundtables which act as a space where fellows can hear about each others’ journeys, share problems they encounter, brainstorm solutions, and overall support one another. The roundtables consist of a discussion session as well as a teaching session where speakers present relevant lessons and resources.

BIPOC Roundtable

The BIPOC Roundtable is a quarterly online gathering for our nationwide fellows. It is a safe space where experiences, ideas, and opinions are shared. The space is meant to foster open and honest conversations. However, we recognize even as BIPOC, we all have unique experiences and opinions, which highlights that no matter what we must treat each other with respect.

Each roundtable has a theme for its discussions and the provided resources. The theme for the December roundtable is How to amplify your voice as a BIPOC leader and a Let’s talk mental health session. Most roundtables are exclusive to the fellows, but some are open to members of our partnered organizations and the public. If you would like to see what our BIPOC Roundtable is like contact us!

January Spotlight

In January we celebrated the newest member of our BIPOC Fellowship program, Erica Ellis! She is the Co-Executive Director of Programs & Operations at the Environmental Youth Alliance which operates on the unceded, shared territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, also known as Vancouver, BC. The EYA strives to empower youth from equity-deserving communities to become environmental stewards through programs which allow them to connect with urban greenspaces. We fully support their vision, and if you want to learn more about it visit the Team’s page for Erica’s profile!

The BIPOC Fellowship in 2021

Nasha Choudhury - BIPOC Fellowship Director

“We want our partners to recognize and celebrate the amazing potential and the unique perspectives our BIPOC leaders have to offer. They are a group of people who, so far, have not been represented to the extent they should be in our sector”

Shania Ramharrack - BIPOC Fellowship Intern

“As someone who is new to the sector, it’s inspiring to see that these types of fellowships exist for BIPOC leaders. All of the fellows are so passionate about the work that they do, as their organizations address inequities in field and have positive implications for the environment. That’s the kind of work I want to do in the future. ”

Nelly Leo - BIPOC Fellow

“It's been such an energizing fall/winter period! We're getting such good feedback and people are really showing up as their full selves. The kind of conversations we've been having really reminds us why we do what we do. And I’m thankful to the BIPOC Fellowship for helping support that. ”
